With the establishment of the Faculty of Science at the University of Guilan in 1977, undergraduate programs in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology were initiated in the city of Rasht. From the beginning of the academic year 1977, the chemistry department started its independent activities and offered undergraduate programs in pure chemistry, chemistry teaching, and later, applied chemistry. In 1992, the department began accepting master's students, followed by PhD students in various branches of chemistry in 1996. In 2015, with the approval of the university's board of trustees, the department was upgraded to the Faculty of Chemistry.
Currently, the faculty, with the academic expertise of 33 faculty members (18 professors, 14 associate professors, and 1 assistant professor), is responsible for the education and research of nearly 800 students at the undergraduate (pure and applied chemistry) and graduate levels (organic, analytical, physical, inorganic, pharmaceutical, and nanochemistry). The faculty is organized into three academic departments: a) Organic and Polymer chemistry, b) Inorganic, Analytical, and Nanochemistry, and c) Applied and Physical Chemistry. The faculty is equipped with laboratories and advanced instruments such as HPLC, UV-vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR, XRD, GC-MS, DRS, AAS, etc. In addition to classrooms and offices for professors and staff, the faculty has seven teaching laboratories, 18 specialized research laboratories, and a central laboratory.
With its experienced faculty members, including four of the top 2% and one of the top 1% of scientists worldwide, the faculty has consistently been one of the leading chemistry faculties in Iran. Hundreds of articles published in international scientific journals are the result of the work of the faculty's distinguished professors and students. Notably, a large number of the faculty's graduates are now faculty members at major universities and research institutions across the country, making significant contributions to the advancement of the country. Moreover, the faculty has shown remarkable collaboration with other research, industrial, and academic centers, especially in recent years.
