Department of Animal Sciences

About

The Department of Animal Science has a long history within the University of Guilan. It is located on the first floor of the new Building of Faculty of Agriculture. It was established in 1977 to support research and teaching related to Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition, and Animal Physiology. Currently, the department has 12 full-time faculty members and 178 students.
Our mission is to create, extend and disseminate applied and theoretical scientific knowledge of the Animal Sciences through scholarly research, teaching, and service.

Department Values and Operating Principles
We offer graduate training with options for BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. degrees in three major areas of specialization: Animal Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition, and Animal Physiology. Our Students, based on a regular educational program, learn the necessary skills for conducting relevant activities in the field of animal and poultry science. Therefore, the graduate students will be prepared to be employed by consulting companies in the animal and or poultry profession.
The graduate theses and research plans are financially assisted by the University of Guilan, the Ministry of Jihad-e-Agriculture of Iran, and local, regional, and or national animal companies and corporations.
The Department of Animal Science accepts willingly potential students from Iran and all over the world, in particular from the Middle East to take advantage of training in animal science and conducting research projects in tropical and or subtropical humid conditions.
Major and Program

Agricultural Economics majors complete a set of prerequisite courses, a core of classes offered by the Agricultural Economics Department, and one or more fields comprised of selected courses from outside the department.  The core includes courses in economic reasoning, agribusiness management, environmental and resource policy, agricultural policy, economic development, and analytical methods.  The program permits students flexibility in choosing fields to fit their career interests.  Majors must complete one and are strongly encouraged to complete two fields.  The curriculum balances breadth and depth, and lets students develop academic skills in two or more areas.  The program provides a good foundation for careers in economics, resource or environmental policy, agribusiness, and international agriculture.

Upon completion of the degree program, students should have acquired the following knowledge and skills:
An understanding of economic terms and concepts.
An ability to draw inferences from data.
A knowledge of relevant laws, institutions, and policies.

Facilities and equipment

Our Department has access to high quality animal research facilities and a range of laboratory facilities in molecular genetics, genomics, nutrient analyses, physiology and microbiology both inside and outside the University for basic and advance research in various fields of animal sciences. The department also has on-campus large farms for experimental animal researches.
  • Teaching

The missions of Department of animal Science are to enhance the knowledge, insight and skills of volunteers in higher education in animal extension and education, so that they are creative, entrepreneurial and capable of intellectual independence and can be the source of effective services in Community. Graduates are provided with adequate knowledge and skills in various fields of Animal Sciences. It also conducts fundamental and applied research and adaptation and development in order to produce science and technology in related fields.
  • Research

Our Department members are professional researchers and authors with expertise in various fields of Animal Science. They are familiar with new technologies in animal science researches which led by four team members each having more than 10 years of experience working as professional researchers.
